ENGIN® - The Gold Standard in Message Brokering Technology

ENGIN, the world's number one Enterprise Generic Integrator, functions as a complete enterprise system integrator allowing communication, data transfer and interpretation between various computer systems with dissimilar native communication protocols and message formats. There is no better middleware solution available. Period.

First launched in 1989 and continuously improved since, ENGIN is the global standard in message brokering technology. Our software, with installations around the world, is built to ensure complete application integration, unlimited scalability, and extreme modularity to ensure cost effective and rapid deployment in the most complex or straightforward environments. You license and integrate only what you need for your business strategy.

ENGIN is architected to form the framework for high volume, transaction-centric applications. Over the course of the last seventeen years, we have invested heavily in the continuous technical enhancement and flexibility of ENGIN and today it is being used as the transaction and integration platform for a diverse set of applications across many industry verticals.

ENGIN Performs as:

  • The leading HIPAA compliant transaction system processing over 200 million healthcare transactions every year for a nation wide consortium of Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations and other health care insurers
  • A transaction backbone for Alliance Data Systems' credit card operations and merchant services groups
  • The messaging manager for Delta Airlines handling more than 100 concurrent interfaces and 10's of millions of messages per day
  • An integration broker that seamlessly ties together the inter-business processes of multi-line European insurer Achmea

Modules

Message Compounding

  • Support for up to 256 destinations
  • Retry capability for each of the destinations
  • Each destination can have its own message format
  • Request/response pair matching
  • Parsing capabilities from the Formatting parse engine
  • Single In to Many Out to Many In to Single Out
Transaction Management

We have provided up to 22 different protocol adapters for plug and play interoperability between systems. Protocol level independence is the "key" to our modular design. Features include:

ENGIN Architecture
M2 Systems ENGIN solution has been designed to provide a highly efficient EAI environment. It provides all of the following components as part of a single, integrated solution:
  • Environment Manager - The Environment Manager is the supervisor process that manages all internal activities. While transactions do not flow through it, the entire ENGIN network of processes, applications, and user exits fall under its control. The Environment Manager is responsible for maintaining the integrity of all ENGIN subsystems and applications and for synchronizing all satellite processes.
  • Command Center - The Command Center consists of a graphical user interface through which all components of ENGIN may be controlled and all ENGIN commands may be executed from this facility. It provides a customizable view of ENGIN configurations including, paths, processes, and events.
  • Data Dictionary - The Data Dictionary provides the definition of the data segments and elements, the elimination of redundant data entry, simplification of default output mapping, powerful output rule definition, the handling of nested groups with multiple occurrences, definition for an infinite number of data types, and data element format templates.
  • Message Queuing - ENGIN's message queuing backbone provides the actual transport capability that manages the actual routing, tracking, sequencing, distribution and workflow management of all messages and transactions that are processed within ENGN applications. Every incoming or outgoing message is uniquely identified and can be processed in as granular a fashion as is desired. Sync points can be assigned at every process step and messages can be acted upon by other ENGIN functional components at any point in the process. This granularity also allows ENGIN to provide rollback capability based upon the user's definition of a unit of work.
  • Communication Management - By definition an EAI solution provides compatible connectivity to disparate applications and systems. ENGIN's Communication Managers provide connectivity to other systems through a wide variety of protocols and standards. For example, connectivity to a web-based application could be via HTTP, HTTPS or FTP, while connectivity to a legacy mainframe application would utilize an SNA connector or adapter. A wide variety of communications managers are available with ENGIN.
  • Business Rule Processing - The Business Rules Processor determines what actions are performed on message components at any step in a workflow, reads them from ENGIN's internal repository and performs the necessary actions. Business rules can be defined within ENGIN through the use of a GUI-based configuration tool and do not require the utilization of external custom code.
  • Translation / Transformation - ENGIN's Translator enables messages or transactions to be converted from one form or format to be converted into one or more other formats. Translation maps (i.e. - HCFA1500 to X12 4010 837) are defined through a GUI-based configuration utility and do not require external custom coding. The Translator provides any-to-any complex message translation, where a complex message is defined as one unit-of-work such as one transaction set. The translation is controlled by the data dictionary, which provides the details of message syntax, semantics, and output stage definition. The translation function is independent of data size or location. M2 Systems maintains a rich library of pre-built translation maps that significantly reduce implementation timeframes (e.g. - HIPAA Transaction Sets).

Case Studies

Electronic Data Systems

Founded in 1962 as Electronic Data Systems, EDS is the leading global information technology services company. EDS helps clients manage the business and technology complexities of today's digital economy. For instance, they support more than 2.2 million desktops worldwide, enough for every person in the United Arab Emirates. They also manage about 46,000 servers and provide Web hosting for about 750 clients worldwide.

M2 Systems Corporation provides a Gateway Clearinghouse for EDS. The Clearinghouse handles incoming and outgoing messages from various insurance companies, doctors and hospitals. M2 Systems also provides system analysis, custom coding development, testing, training and maintenance support to EDS.

Fujitsu Invia Oyj

This very sensitive, secure solution allows the Finnish equivalent of United States Governmental agencies such as the CIA, NAS, INS and Customs to share information among their disparate systems and databases, using M2 Systems' ENGIN and Trellis products as the integration and interoperability tool set to enable the exchange. As one can expect, the critical nature of this system requires high availability and is therefore a testament to the confidence that has been placed in the M2 Systems products.

Dutch Police

The Dutch Police chose M2 Systems' ENGIN product to provide data and information systems integration between the twenty-five previously autonomous districts of the Dutch Police. This has allowed them to provide a nationally integrated information service to both fixed and mobile police operatives. This has provided significant value to the Dutch Police. Not only are there disparate application systems involved, but, unlike in the US where VHF and UHF are used, because of bandwidth limitations in Europe, the Dutch Police elected to use GSM as the mobile communications protocol/method.

KPN

The telecommunications industry in The Netherlands is changing drastically, as it is throughout the world. In an effort to become more effective and head off potential competition, KPN Telecom, formerly known as PTT Telecom, has developed a more efficient system for supporting their field installers operating throughout the country. The backbone of this solution is M2 Systems' ENGIN Message Broker used to integrate legacy systems for Work Order Management and Parts Management with a new system for providing this information to the Field Installers over a GSM mobile communication network. KPN expects that this solution will be rolled out to support over 16,000 field employees by the end of 1999.

TNT

TNT offers on-demand time-definite and day-certain door to door express delivery services for documents, parcels, and freight to and from more than 200 countries. TNT's comprehensive network of depots extends to all countries of the world and operates everywhere with uniform processes and systems. It works with a fully integrated set of worldwide common computer systems that are installed in every country and allows the company to support the global needs of the customers. TNT offers customers real-time Internet based tracing, tracking and ordering services. M2 Systems Corporation provides the technology framework to support interactions between TNT systems, Depot's and customers. M2 is the conduit for PC Client software upgrades, daily table updates for the PC client software, EDI transactions and feedback loops. All transaction and file traffic is managed via a Trading Partner Management system that controls system access for the Trading Partners into the TNT environment, as well as translation , routing, and billing support functions. TNT uses a combination of proprietary, ANSI x12 and EDIFACT standards for their trading partner formats. Having a world-wide distributed trading partner setup and customer service function, TNT utilizes the M2 software for monitoring and administrative activity at the trading partner level.
